Phew. Canada is saved again.

Yay. The Liberal party minority government has narrowly survived a no-confidence vote to bring down the government. This was brought up by the Conservative party.
Now, I do need to reiterate for non-Canadians, especially those people living with me below the Canadian border, that the Canadian Conservative party is not as scary as the American Republican party. They’re more equivalent to the Democrats in the US.
However, having said that it still would be scary if the Conservative party were to win. The leader of this party had said some scary things over the years, saying he’d like to tear down the public health care system, etc. See In Their Own Words
We can all breathe a big sigh of relief now

Stephen Harper said that he would like to tear down the public health care system? When?
I’m aware of comments he’s made saying that he feels that Canadians should be free to purchase their own health care outside of the public system, like, for example, Sweden. But I’ve never heard him suggest that health care should not be accessible to everyone.

Steve,
I added the link I was using for reference to my article, but I’ll also add it here: http://www.intheirownwords.ca/harper.html/health
The most telling of these is: “It’s past time the feds scrapped the Canada Health Act.”

Well, I would say that it’s a mischaracterization to suggest that scrapping the Canada Health Act is akin to desiring to be rid of public health care. Remember, the Canada Health Act doesn’t just ensure that all Canadians have access to public health care, it also prohibits Canadians from seeking out private alternatives and supplements to what the public system provides.

On the one hand I would have like to see the government topple as it would be a good lesson to thoes in power, on the other hand I don’t think politicians learn so it would be wasted…

My personal feelings are that I’d like to see the results of the inquiry. I obviously want to see whoever is responsible for the corruption taken down. If that happens to include Martin, then sure. But, until we find out I’m not making a call.
Also, I’d trust a Liberal government with (assumedly) a few corrupt MPs than a Conservative government. I’d like to keep health care and don’t want to see discrimination encoded as law (gay marriage)

Why is it always the conservatives toppling the liberals? Let’s get aggressive, people!
May 20, 2005 @ 15:47:54
Well, I don’t notice it as much in Canada, but in the US it seems like the conservatives are always pissed off about something. They need something to make people mad to get them fired up, in which case they may as well use that energy to bring down a government, or else all that energy may go towards something less desirable…
Stewart put it well on the Daily Show around election time. He was showing the Republican Convention and flashed through a lot of very angry and passionate speeches, then said “We’re mad!!! We’re not going to take this any more! We only control the Presidency, House and Senate! We also need…. oh, wait.”
