Diplomatic Immunity
Jan 30
Was watching a TV show last night where the story involved diplomatic immunity. I’ve always thought it’s a strange thing, so afterwards I decided to read more about it. It’s so easy to look these things up on Wikipedia that I try to make a habit of it (it’s also fun to just randomly follow links there and read the articles).
Anyways, here’s the one for today: Diplomatic Immunity
One interesting tidbit is the argument for still using diplomatic immunity, since I didn’t know there really was a good one. It’s that the likelihood of an official of another country, especially a non-friendly one, getting a fair trial would be low. So, the home country is supposed to handle the prosecution.
Interesting.

The problem with diplomatic immunity is that if one has it, they could abuse it if they are caught having committed a horrible crime (such as rape or murder). While the home country, as far as I know, can revoke the diplomatic immunity, That doesn’t mean they will, even such a case. That would mean that if a person with diplomatic immunity was found to be the person who had committed a string of murders (i.e. say serial killer) and for some (stupid in my opinion) reason his/ her home country did not revoke their diplomatic immunity, then that would mean that all the host country could do was expell the person. Essentially that person would have gotten away with murder, or whatever horrible crime they committed.

I never thought that on the flip side (north americans having diplomatic immunity) could really be a good thing. If say a a north american female diplomat went to a middle eastern country and had diplomatic immunity, that could mean that the mornal punishment for women, who say, didn’t wear the proper middle eastern/ muslim garb would not apply to women with diplomatic immunity. Or others things that they may have done or said that in a lot of countries is not even remotely against the law (say like europe, north america, australia/ new zealand, and such). But still, its a difficult situation, diplomatic immunity. Where as in some cases it can be (as I just learned from a tv show I am watching) a very good thing, in other cases it is a terrible idea.
