5 years later: a reason to be proud
Jun 10
5 years ago today Ontario legalized same-sex marriage.
A great recap: Five years ago today, gay marriage became legal in Ontario – and equality has lived more happily ever after
Some of the other blogs linking to this proclaim: “… and the sky hasn’t fallen”, which is quite true. I’m curious how many marriages have taken place since what I imagine was an initial rush.

A reason to be proud, eh?
As much as I applaud your progressive attitude, I must ask…
How many gay marriages have you attended in the last 5 years?

Yes, it is a reason to be proud, to live in a country that doesn’t officially support another kind of bigotry and discrimination.
To answer your question, I believe I have attended 1 or 2 weddings total since moving back here a bit over 2 years ago, none of which were same-sex. And I must ask, what possible relevance does your question have to whether we should be proud of our achievements?

Certainly, Canadians deserve to be proud of their tolerant society. It’s a general acceptance of people of all walks of life, countries of origin and religious beliefs that attracts immigrants from all over the world. Canadians are right that the government has no place being judgmental about the personal affairs of citizens. They should be neutral. Leave the judgments to religion.
But that doesn’t mean that Canadians necessarily think gay or alternative lifestyles are acceptable. It may merely be the fear that if we let the government crack down on one group, how long will it be til they turn decide to turn on us?

I’m sure there are lots of people in Canada who don’t approve of gay people, but I’d argue if there were enough of them it would have been a large political issue. I don’t believe we saw any effect in any election on this issue, for or against. As a counter example we can point to US federal politics, where the minority who are really against same-sex marriage are vocal enough to cause a stir.
