Hopefully we’re witnessing a McCain implosion, but probably not

I like Fareed Zakaria. He’s always pretty objective and manages to summarize the key points in any problem. This edition: Palin Is Ready? Please.
It’s difficult to predict how this will all play out, but it really does seem like the McCain campaign is digging itself into a hole. From his Palin pick (which is unwinding quickly) to his obvious ploy to cancel the debate, it doesn’t seem much is going well for him right now.
However, as always, national US politics is so screwed up that the discovery of a candidates gay 3rd cousin can change the course of history.

While the mainstream media has been won over by her beauty pagent demeanor, the tabloids are exploding with revelations about Palin and her family.
Her oldest son, Track, prior to joining the army, was reportedly known around town for constant and heavy use of weed, meth and coke. He often used a fake ID to buy alcohol until one of his highschool teachers got in line behind him at the liquor store. Perhaps Track was sent off to join the army less out of patriotism and more to keep him out of trouble.
Who would have thought that running a woman for VP would actually do more harm to feminism than good? What a great example she sets for women! And worse, she confirms stereotypes of women in the minds of men, acting like an airhead who get by on charm!

Alright, enough about Palin. Yeah, she’s underqualified for national politics let alone the executive branch. Yeah, her personal life is a mess of contradictions. Those are easy criticisms to make.
But let’s not forget that Obama took campaign contributions from Fanny Mae & Freddy Mac. Let’s not forget that the Democrats blindly supported a bailout package that would have given a blank check to the Republican administration that they blame for creating the problem. Let’s not forget that neither Obama nor McCain had enough clout within their own party to pass an emergency bill like this. The more the economy melts down, the more Obama benefits, if his 5% gain since last week is any indication. Yet he’s just as lost as the rest of us.

Um, why should anyone stop talking about Palin? Don’t you think the possibility that she could be running the US is important enough to discuss?
I don’t blame McCain or Obama for the failure of the bailout package, even though it’s failure is probably a good thing (assuming a better package comes out now). However, Obama didn’t grandstand his ability to “go save the country” and push the package through, as McCain did. His bad press and falling poll numbers are his own fault there.

Comments on the VP debate:
Palin: I’ve never heard someone string so many words together that don’t amount to a sentence! Plus, she promised healthcare and contradicted McCain several times. Didn’t anyone tell her she’s a Republican?
Biden: Obama opposes gay marriage? Really? Didn’t anyone tell Biden he’s a Democrat?

I haven’t watched any of the debates yet, although I may at some point. There’s no way a debate would change my preference, so the only thing that concerns me is the perception (in the media) of what happened. Sounds like last night was a wash, although since Palin was able to avoid acting like a complete moron I’d expect her numbers to improve slightly.
