Anti-Israel Crap
Jan 09
The title, “anti-Israel crap”, is a quote from Warren Kinsella, which is indicative of his blind pro-Israel attitude. This has always driven me crazy. There are many important points surrounding this continued conflict that should be debated in a civilized way. However, people like Kinsella immediately classify any opinion not qualifying as “pro-Israel” as anti-semitic. This is a transparent attempt to bully people into staying quiet as a cowardly debate tactic.
Historical guilt should never be a reason to forever give an entire nation a blank cheque, especially when one of the actions this is allowing is almost as inhumane as the reason for the original guilt.
Again, I’m not saying one side is right and one is wrong in this conflict, but the inability to debate the issue will guarentee it never gets solved.

This made me despair a bit too, until I realized they weren’t convincing anyone. Let them have that point of view, it won’t make a difference in the end. People are able to think for themselves, and they will condemn attrocities no matter who commits them.

Both Kinsella and Ignatieff have egg on their faces this morning, though. See the Guardian report about Obama’s intentions to begin indirect contact with Hamas.
Ignatieff is always thinking first about denial plausibility. That’s why he sounds and reads the way he does. It’s his only priority — well, apart from himself. Let’s watch him and Harper get around Obama.

If Obama does open some form of communication with Hamas, he will earn respect possibly even cooperation from the Palestinians. However, it will infuriate Israel, who have been cracking down on Gaza ever since Hamas was democratically elected.
The problem is that you can control Palestine with tanks and unmanned aerial bombers. But how do you control Israel? They have broken numerous UN orders, for example by continuing to build Jewish-only settlements inside Gaza and bulldozing Palestinian homes for the crime of being a family member of a suspect.
Israel has only one ally, it’s biggest weapons dealer, the US. But like a drug dealer, the US has a hard time separating it’s own self-interest in making money with the well-being of it’s customers. The world has been waiting decades for the US to flex its muscle to end this conflict. Get the hint: they never will! If this is ever to end, it’ll take truly impartial mediators to step in.

Randy,
As much as I wish Obama would, I don’t think it’s feasible for any US politician to take any stance that could be seen as critical of Israel.
But, on the off chance he can pull it off, what should it matter to the US if it infuriates Israel? A country that can’t survive without US aid, both monetary and military, not to mention the UN veto, has no recourse against it. Will Israel retaliate by not purchasing US arms with aid money given by the US?
