97% of climate scientists agree

Wow, and this isn’t a lead-in to a bad joke. I’m surprised the number is so close to 100%. Given all the political backlash against climate change (especially in the US) I thought the number would have been lower, more like 80 or 90%.
Why don’t we trust climate scientists?
Yet, many people still think this is some huge conspiracy. I’ve always wondered what they think the motivation for this conspiracy is? Maybe they’ve been duped into thinking it’s a ploy to get more of their tax dollars?

I’ve been reading Climate Cover Up by James Hogan, available from DeSmogBlog.com. Very illuminating, and I recommend it most highly. He traces through the PR battle waged by Big Carbon to deliberately mislead politicians and the public. Many of the same players as in the battle by Big Tobacco.

Even if 100% of climate scientists agreed, the media would still be duty-bound to report that “some people are skeptical.” And then those same skeptics would use the mass media reports of skepticism as proof that there is something to be skeptical of! It’s circular logic designed to prevent anyone from doing anything constructive.
It’s not about science. I wish it was. But it’s just partisanship. Back in the 90′s, Democrats lead by Clinton adopted the environment as their party’s pet cause. Which is why Bush Jr. declared war on the environment, gutting the EPA, MMS, NOAA, NASA, et al., and filling them with industry shills to axe regulations and inspections.
Naturally, Obama has to offer some lip service to the environment, in order to keep his base happy, but he knows it’ll be another partisan battle to get anything passed.
I’ve met people who think climate change is a hoax, and they are all hardcore conservative, Limbaugh listening, Fox watching, pro-business gun-nuts. And not one of them has looked at the science. Being a Republican is about not trusting science and not trusting liberals, yet somehow trusting everything you’re told by Fox News.
