Who won the Qur’an burning media war?

It’s hard to say, but setting aside the obvious bigotry of the Florida pastor, it feels like he lost, at least here in North America. I say that because the stunt seems to have stirred up an overdue debate that almost universally ended up on the side of acceptance of other peoples beliefs. While “tolerance” of Muslims is running low in the West right now, when faced with such a clear case of intolerance, it’s pretty hard to be on that side.
However, I suspect the impression many people in the rest of the world were left with would be closer to “Americans are burning Qur’ans” without all the nuanced debate seen here on call-in shows, etc, that showed how the average person felt. In that sense, I think the pastor may have won, given his goal seems to be to fan the flames of tension that exist right now.

I disagree that the pastor won. Sure, he got lots of free publicity, but this is a case where freedom of speech did its job. One lone nutjob (no relation) spoke out as loud as he could, espousing beliefs most citizens abhor, and those same citizens turned around and shouted their displeasure right back.
The pastor didn’t back down because he changed his mind, he backed down because the backlash was so huge that he didn’t dare go through with it. A hundred TV cameras and a thousand reporters camped out on the church lawn, asking him and his few remaining parishioners over and over why they’re such racists and why they’re going to endanger troops.
The headlines in the middle east will still play up the wide-spread anti-muslim sentiment in America, but I think Americans can be proud of the fact that the vast majority opposed this nonsense.

I think we basically agree. My only point where I thought it could be argued he won was outside the US, where he seems to have successfully stirred up more divisions (note the people that were killed in protests/riots in response to this).
